About Bikram Yoga
Bikram’s yoga for beginners is a specific form of Hatha yoga, developed by Bikram Choudhury, a renowned hatha yoga master. Bikram Yoga is a revolutionary series of 26 postures (asanas) and two breathing exercises (pranayamas), performed in a heated room. Bikram Yoga is suitable for all ages and all levels of ability.
Each posture stretches and strengthens specific muscles, ligaments and joints needed for the next posture. The Bikram method stimulates the organs, glands and nerves, moving fresh oxygenated blood to 100% of the body, restoring all systems to a healthy working order.
Bikram scientifically designed this 90-minute program to deliver total health through the balancing and strengthening of every system in the human body in order to prevent illness and injury, promote weight loss, and limit the effects of aging. In addition, the series of postures combine skills of concentration, patience, determination and self-control that increase mental clarity and reduce stress. Bikram yoga is performed in a heated room to warm your muscles, prevent injury, allow a deeper workout and cleanse the body by flushing toxins. All classes are conducted in front of mirrors to raise body awareness and to refine alignment. Bikram’s Hatha Yoga is a preventative and therapeutic tool. Whether your goal is to cure illness or injury, lose weight, learn to relax, strengthen/tone the body, improve posture or overall well being, people of all levels of fitness and health will benefit from this program of hatha yoga.
All of our classes at Bikram Yoga Capalaba are conducted by certified teachers who will guide you safely through the entire series.

What if I’m not flexible?
Most people see photos of the postures and think there is no way they can do that which in turn stops them from coming to class. This is the biggest misconception about yoga. It doesn’t matter how flexible you are. As long as you try 100% the right way you will receive 100% of the benefits. Bikram Yoga is for everybody and every body!
Is Bikram Yoga good for weight loss??
A minimum of 10 classes per month is recommended to get the benefits of Bikram Yoga, among which is weight normalization. As a beginner, It takes three classes for your body to understand the proper approach to the posture, and ten classes for your body to begin to work with postures. You will realize optimization of all your body systems.
Digestion and respiration, as well as endocrine, lymphatic and elimination systems will begin to work harmoniously. Your appetite will normalize, and your unhealthy cravings will diminish. All of these results will help to normalize your weight if you devote yourself to regular practice, at least, but preferably more than 3 times per week.
Can I practice Bikram Yoga while pregnant?
We do not recommend to practice during your first trimester, however if you have had a regular Bikram practice for at least 6 months prior to becoming pregnant then we welcome you back into the hot room for your second and third trimesters. Please always notify your teacher as they can help you with the modified poses. Speak to Kylie for first hand experience of practicing while pregnant! We also sell Rajahsree’s Pregnancy DVD at the studio which you can do in the comfort of your own home.
Testimonials
For a long time one of my major goals has been to follow in my late father’s footsteps during WW2 in New Guinea by trekking over the Owen Stanley Range to Kokoda. Earlier this month I undertook a trek in New Guinea with a focus on the war history during 1942. I came away more informed and with the utmost respect for all the soldiers who took part in this “bloody campaign”.
From talking to people who had preceded me and from what I had read about Kokoda, I knew it was arduous and not to be underestimated. Apparently Kokoda is rated as the toughest trek of its kind in the world.
After 35 years of veterinary practice the spirit was willing but the flesh was weak so I needed to first get fit to achieve my goal. This started when I began Bikram yoga at Capalaba in early 2009 after my mate, Tony Kerrin, recommended I give it a try. Since then I have practiced about three times a week and there is no doubt about my improved level of fitness. Strict medicals are now required for aspiring Kokoda trekkers to help prevent further tragedies on the track. In February of this year I had to pass treadmill stress tests to be accepted for the trek. Fortunately I had done a similar test 20 years ago and was able to compare the before and after. Then my fitness was rated as average (not a surprise, I was working ridiculous hours and not exercising) whilst the recent result has improved considerably and is now rated as excellent. At this point the only change to my routine was Bikram yoga (retirement probably helped as well). After the medical and for the next four months I endlessly climbed hills and put as many miles into my legs as I could manage. Towards the end I was exercising 6 days a week and my wife, Lyn, was calling me “the mountain goat”.
Was it enough? Nothing could adequately prepare you for the Kokoda experience except Kokoda. I could try and describe Kokoda’s difficulty as like going to Bikram yoga for 8-9 hours a day, continue that for 10 days straight, and then you might be close.
In retrospect, it was the correct decision for me to make Bikram yoga a major part my preparation for Kokoda. Being accustomed to exercise in heat and humidity your body copes better with the physical and mental demands. The inner strength that you develop also enables you to continue to put one foot in front of the other and prevents the words “I give up” ever entering your head.
Was Kokoda worth it? Every step! Was it difficult? Unbelievably! Did Bikram help? Absolutely!

I just wanted to thank you for saving my life. Before taking your classes, my blood pressure was around 150/95 which was threatening to lead me to a hereditary heart attack. Both my parents died of massive heart attacks. The medication I was taking had worse side effects than benefits so I had to find an alternative. After many life changing changes to diet and fitness regimes my blood pressure stayed too high. Since taking your classes my blood pressure has dropped to around 128/75, the best it has ever been. So thank you and don’t give up on me, I need your expertise more than you will ever know. Cheers!

Ten months of Bikram Yoga has transformed my body, mind and soul: I am ten kilos lighter; more flexible, much stronger; free from eczema and psoriasis; have improved posture and digestion; greater focus and stamina. I feel more energised at 42 than I was at 22, so my yoga practice has become an integral part of my life. If you choose to be hooked on anything, get hooked on Bikram Yoga!
